Biography:
Prof. João G. Crespo is currently a Professor of Chemical Engineering at the School of Science and Technology – NOVA University of Lisbon and the Dean of Institute of Chemical and Biological Technology, ITQB NOVA, Portugal. He is the former Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation and former coordinator of NOVA Doctoral School. He is a co-founder of the spin-off company “Zeyton Nutraceuticals”. He is notably a member of the Portuguese Academy of Engineering and an honorary member of the European Membrane Society. He has to his name over 400 peer-reviewed papers in the domain of membrane science and engineering. His research over the years has focussed on membrane materials and processes, bio separation, water treatment and valorization of bioresources, and advanced process monitoring.

“I can’t resist sharing with you some of the questions I have been asking myself over the years. Ultimately, a researcher is someone who is curious and seeks answers to the questions they ask themselves. It has been exactly 39 years since I first came into contact with membranes and membrane processes. It is impossible to let go of the subject. The curiosity is still there, and sometimes the answers are not easy to find.
Today, I am going to talk to you very briefly about some of the topics that fascinate me: how the engineering around a membrane can determine its function and performance; how we can use energy efficiently by bringing it to where it is needed (close to interfaces where mass and heat transfer occur); how can we monitor membrane processes at the molecular level and in a non-invasive way; and finally, can we produce membranes without using fossil fuels?
We won’t have time to talk about everything in detail, but it will be a fantastic opportunity to be with you and exchange ideas.”
