The Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering at University of Iceland is looking for a full-time doctoral student for a three-year project on membrane-based nutrient recovery from microalgal wastes.
Qualification requirements
• Master degree in environmental engineering, chemical engineering, or related disciplines.
• Experience in membrane technology, wastewater treatment is an advantage.
• Independent work capability and good communication skills.
• Good skills in written and spoken English.

Call for organizing European Membrane Society Summer School 2024
The Society is keen on supporting scientific or technical events related to the field of membranes and membrane processes, particularly with a focus on events involving young and early-stage researchers. Therefore, the EMS has opened the Call for Proposals for the 39th EMS Summer School in 2024.
In order to have your Summer School accepted as an EMS event, you should apply to the EMS Council according to the following guidelines:
The application should specify the following:

- description of the facilities for the Summer School and proposed dates;
- the tentative program, including course contents and timing;
- members of the organizing committee (including members of the EMS Council);
- members of the scientific committee (including members of the EMS Council);
- budget outline, including:
- any request for EMS funding or loan;
- list of sponsors;
- expected number of participants;
- break-even number;
- registration fees estimation.
Any outsourcing of organizational work should be included in the budget. Any EMS loan received would be expected to be returned as the first call on excess income over expenses. Additional excess income will be split evenly between the EMS and the organizers. The EMS will not cover losses beyond the EMS funding. The EMS membership fees should be collectible with the registration fees. All rights and duties will be formalized in a contract with the EMS.

Job Description
You will be part of the Membrane Research Team and will work directly under the supervision of the Head of Membrane Research, Dr Zhiwei Jiang. You will be involved working on a wide range of membrane technology, including membrane formation, membrane morphology characterisation, and performance evaluation. Overall, you need to be flexible and ready to grow your skills and experience as the company grows and our technology evolves.
Job Responsibilities
• Working with a range of membrane formation techniques including phase inversion, coating and interfacial polymerisation.
• Using both lab bench batch and continuous roll-to-roll platforms for membrane fabrication.
• Employing a wide range of techniques to quantify membrane morphology and properties.
• Employing equipment and analysis for the measurement of membrane functional performance.
• Following, writing, reviewing, and maintaining of membrane production procedures .
• Responsible for independent development, implementation and reporting of membrane R&D projects.
• Actively contribute to initiation and managing of incidents, risk assessments and COSHH forms in the Membrane Research department.
• Attend regular internal and external meetings with stakeholders; prepare high quality manuscripts for publication; attend international conferences.
Job Requirements
• PhD in chemical engineering / chemistry / materials science with experience of membrane fabrication.
• Experience at membrane performance evaluation for liquid systems and preferably for organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN).
• Excellent record-keeping and adherence to safety codes and protocols are essential.

You will be working as a member of the Membranes Science and Technology cluster, an outstanding research team dedicated to pushing the boundaries of membrane technology. Our cluster is dedicated to solving complex separation problems by harnessing the potential of membranes. These membranes consist of a tailored combination of different materials with unique properties, resulting in exceptional separation characteristics.
As a PhD candidate, you will play a vital role in the development of functionalized hollow fiber membranes using the chemistry in a spinneret approach. The primary objective of this PhD project is to demonstrate novel chemistries and sustainable solvents to create composite hollow fiber membranes with enhanced functionalities. Additionally, we will be applying modelling techniques to generate a fundamental understanding of the underlying processes and to support and guide membrane fabrication experiments.
Your Profile
• You have, or will shortly, acquire a master’s degree (or equivalent) preferably with distinction (or international equivalent) in chemical engineering, materials engineering, chemistry or a related field.
• You are creative and have excellent analytical and communication skills.
• You bring good team spirit and like to work in an interdisciplinary and internationally oriented environment.
• You are proficient in English.
• You have a background in membrane technology, polymer chemistry, or materials synthesis.
• You have prior experience with experimental skills, ideally including membrane fabrication and characterization techniques.
• You have knowledge or proven practical programming experience in Python, and/or MATLAB or are highly motivated to learn such.
