Membrane surface functionalization: Why and how?

In this webinar, the very active research area of membrane surface modification or functionalization will be discussed with emphasis on the needs for special surface properties in real membrane applications. Criteria are modularity, tunability and sustainability of the approaches. One important aspect is the decision about the integration of surface functionalization in the membrane fabrication process or in the usage cycle of a membrane module. The latter option is preferred for a number of long-time continuous membrane operations, but it will require adapted methodologies that allow task-specific functionalization of membranes in modules including methods that are suited for regeneration of the desired functionality.

Prof. Dr. Mathias Ulbricht is full professor for Chemical Technology in the Chemistry Department of University Duisburg-Essen, Germany (www.uni-due.de/tech2chem). His research interests are in the field of functional polymeric as well as nanohybrid materials and have a focus on synthetic membranes and membrane-based technologies for water purification, bioseparation and energy conversion.
