The Material Research team, which is a part of TECH center at Donaldson EMEA is looking for a Materials Research Engineer function to support R&D programs within the Polymer Engineering group.

This team is mainly responsible for fundamental understanding of filtration problems and solving customer problems to secure stable or growth areas for Donaldson, associated with various business units (BU’s).

Within the research scope of TECH Center, a Material Research Engineer interacts with various other Donaldson teams such as Corporate Technology in the USA, Engineering departments of different BU’s,as well as external third parties, such as universities, institutes, suppliers and customers.


The primary responsibility of this role is to develop a new polymer based media or expand the uses of existing microfiltration media to compliment our portfolio of filtration products. As a member of our collaborative teams, you will contribute to our product development through a disciplined process. This role offers an opportunity to contribute in high-visibility, high-impact areas of our businesses.

We are looking for a practical, presize, energetic and self-directed candidate strongly interested in answering fundamental research questions. The candidate will closely interact across Corporate Technology teams in Europe and the USA. Excellent communication, presentation, organization, result oriented working and collaborative mindset are a pre-requisite to thrive in this cross-functional role. Your  responsibilities will be:

  • Filter Media Development, Evaluation & Validation:
    • Assess and develop technical capability for organic polymer based filter media in terms of technical know-how, manufacturing processes and test methods.
    • Hands-on work within a laboratory environment to execute and manage development efforts resulting in commercially valuable technology solutions.
    • Develop expertise in manipulation of polymeric filter media to create robust filters.
    • Maintain a safe work environment and promote safety improvements for existing processes.
    • Develop understanding of the creation and modification of filter media surfaces;
    • Investigate the performance and effect on the quality of final fluid after filtration;
    • Support bringen new filter media concepts to the BU by customizing the solution for specific customer needs;
    • Make use of models and simulations to predict filter media performance/creation
  • Product Engineering support / Consulting:
    • Contribute to presenting new technologies/development to technical community.
    • Provide technical input for business case development within the technology development process
  • Knowledge Management
    • Share understanding of fundamental physico-chemical principles, state of the art technologies and advanced manufacturing techniques with program teams
    • Support Knowledge management for Engineering concerning validation, selection and use of different materials.
    • Collaborate and communicate results to team members and management.
    • Collaborates on IP analysis, writing, and filing.
  • Technologies / Synergies
    • Provides direction on critical problem areas, alternative solutions and potential consequences in the research and development process.
    • Keep up-to-date of new relevant technologies;
    • Identify, recommend and help to deploy new technologies to enhance our products and working practices;
    • Conduct Benchmarking;
    • Stay abreast of broad industry trends to anticipate and develop suitable technology solutions.
  • Plant & Purchasing support
    • Effectively manage the interactions with suppliers, technology partners and customers in the technology development process.


  • Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering or Material Science or Bioscience Engineering.
  • Track record of creativity, innovation and prototyping methods to evaluate new concepts and materials as evidenced by publications, presentations, or patents.
  • 2 years of experience in an engineering position working in team.
  • Technical Skills:
  • Strong knowledge of basic principles in polymer science and filtration required;
  • Experience in membrane development is preferred;
  • Advancedproblem solving and analytical skills;
  • Accurate work
  • Ability to use sound statistical methods for thedesign of experiments and to analyse test results independently
  • Proficiency in English. Good communication skills, both written and verbal;
  • Ability to communicate information to small and large audiences;
