EMS Council Elections - Results

The election of EMS Council members has been concluded. We would like to thank all of you for taking the effort to vote.

The following colleagues have been elected as EMS Council members for the period 2023-2026 (in alphabetical order):
– Aamer Ali
– Frank Lipnizki
– Hannah Roth
– Gyorgy Szekely

We congratulate our new Council members, and on behalf of all the EMS, we thank them in advance for the work they will do for all of us, on a voluntary basis.
We also explicitly thank the candidates who were not elected. The voting results were very sharp, which means that all candidates had a broad support. Their willingness to stand for the elections is more than appreciated.
The new Council will become effective at the beginning of next year (late January or early February 2023).

New email address: ems@emsoc.eu

Dear colleagues,

Please note that the EMS email address has changed.

Now, you contact us at :  ems@emsoc.eu

Reminder: Call for organizing European Membrane Society Summer School 2023

The Society is keen on supporting scientific or technical events related to the field of membranes and membrane processes, particularly with a focus on events involving young and early-stage researchers. Therefore, the EMS has opened the Call for Proposals for the 38th EMS Summer School in 2023.

In order to have your Summer School accepted as an EMS event, you should apply to the EMS Council according to the following guidelines:

The application should specify:

  • description of the facilities for the Summer School and proposed dates;
  • tentative program including course contents and timing;
  • members of the organising committee (including members of the EMS Council);
  • members of the scientific committee (including members of the EMS Council);
  • budget outline, including:
  • any request for EMS funding or loan;
  • list of sponsors;
  • expected number of participants;
  • break-even number.

Any outsourcing of organisational work should be included in the budget. Any EMS loan received would be expected to be returned as the first call on excess income over expenses. Additional excess income is to be split evenly between the EMS and the organisers. The EMS will not cover losses beyond the EMS funding. The EMS membership fees should be collectable with the registration fees. All rights and duties will be formalised in a contract with the EMS.

  • Important websites related to the proposal.

Proposals will be selected according to the following criteria:

  • Scientific programme
  • Conference venue/organisational and professional planning
  • Registration fees
  • Financial risk involved in the event
  • Geographical distribution

The selected application will be announced during the EUROMEMBRANE 2022 conference in November 2022.

Please, send your proposal by September 30, 2022, to:

Karel Friess, karel.friess@vscht.cz

Carla Brazinha, c.brazinha@fct.unl.pt

Richard Maling Barrer Medal

Richard Maling Barrer Medal

The Richard Maling Barrer Medal for Membrane Science and Technology, consisting of 10,000 € plus a lifetime membership in the European Membrane Society, is awarded to an individual to recognise outstanding work of exceptional significance in the area of membrane science and technology. Richard Maling Barrer was one of the pioneers in the membrane field with extensive and significant research on membrane material and gas transport. This award is given by the European Membrane Society to honour Professor Barrer memory and to recognise individuals who have made outstanding contributions that have significantly advanced membrane science and technology.

Anyone working in membrane science and technology is eligible to be nominated (except for current Council members of the European Membrane Society).

Nominations should be submitted by a current member of the European Membrane Society (EMS), not directly by the nominee. Current members of the EMS Council cannot submit the nominations.

The nomination package should include:

(1) A cover letter describing the nominee’s contribution and its importance to the field of membrane science and technology;

(2) Three additional letters in support of the nomination;

(3) Supporting Materials – a complete list of the nominee’s publications, patents, technical reports etc., and pdf copies of 4 selected essential outputs.

The deadline for the complete nomination package submission to the EMS Secretary (via email ems@chimie.ups-tlse.fr) is January 31st 2022, 23:59 h Central European Time (CET).

A panel of referees will review nominations with final decisions made by the EMS Council. An award will only be made if there is a nominee whose contributions are sufficiently outstanding to warrant the prestigious medal. Medal winners will be presented during the Euromembrane 2022 conference.

Guide for Applicants and Organizers - EMS Conferences

A short Guide for Applicants for organising an EMS event has been published: Guide Version 2021

It is meant to help you prepare the proposal to save time and check that you have considered all relevant aspects to make your proposal and the event a success. This Guide is divided into parts - Part I explains aspects that you should address during your application.
