Patrick Meares Prize

Patrick Meares Prize

In 2015, the EMS received a donation from the late Patrick Meares, one of the pioneers of membrane science. From his will, one can read “...with the request, but without imposing any binding trust, that the sum be used to establish a prize to be awarded biannually to a deserving young membrane scientist based on criteria to be established by agreement between the Board and the Council of the Society."

With this in mind, the EMS Council established the Patrick Meares Prize for the best Ph.D. thesis work on Membrane Science.

Award: 1500 Euros

Deadline: 31 March 2024

Eligibility:

  • EMS membership (valid membership at least one year before the application deadline);
  • Ph.D. awarded between 01/07/2021 and 31/03/2024.

Application:

  • Two supporting letters (one from outside the applying institution) in which the contribution of the work to the membrane field performed by the applicant is clearly stated;
  • A two-page summary of the thesis contents and a list of published papers and conference, presentations based on the thesis work.
  • A proof that the Ph.D. has been awarded (copy of the diploma or certificate of completion from the institution awarding the diploma).

The deadline for applications is 31/03/2024, 12:00 PM (CET).

The applications will be submitted to the EMS Secretariat at ems@emsoc.eu

A committee of EMS Council members and Honorary Council Members will evaluate the applications, and the 4 shortlisted candidates will be invited to present their work in a Patrick Meares Prize Symposium that will be held at the Euromembrane 2024 Congress in Prague, Czech Republic (September 8 – 12, 2024).

A panel will evaluate the presentations and nominate the prize winner at Euromembrane 2024.

The 4 shortlisted candidates will receive a free Euromembrane 2024 registration, and the Patrick Meares Prize awardee will win a check of 1,500 euros.

Patrick Meares Prize:

Since earning his Ph.D. in 1949, Patrick Meares has been pivotal in the evolution of membrane science and technology. His pioneering contributions span polymer thermodynamics, polymer materials, and transport mechanisms in reverse osmosis and ion exchange membranes. His tenure at Aberdeen University powered his exploration into biophysics. It led to a significant research period at Harvard University on the opposite side of the Atlantic, where he expanded his studies on membrane transport.

Patrick Meares was recognized for his insightful and thoughtful approach to science. He blended deep intellectual inquiry with a profound ability to connect with others. This unique combination of talents enabled him to make contributions that lay at the heart of basic science and community relationships, forming the foundation of what is now the international membrane science community.

His passion for science matched his commitment to mentoring the next generation of membrane researchers. This dedication is reflected in a brief autobiography and the accolades compiled in a Special Issue of the Journal of Membrane Science dedicated to him in 2002, which highlights his influence and legacy (https://www.sciencedirect.com/journal/journal-of-membrane-science/vol/206/issue/1).

In 2015, the European Membrane Society received a donation from Patrick Meares. His will suggested—without mandating a legal obligation—that his donation be used to establish a biannual prize for a deserving young membrane scientist based on criteria the Society’s Board and Council agreed upon. In response, the EMS Council inaugurated the Patrick Meares Prize to recognize outstanding Ph.D. thesis work in Membrane Science.
