Update: Webinar "Membrane surface functionalization: Why and how?" - Wednesday October 6th at 4:00 PM (CET, Paris time zone)- Mathias Ulbricht

Membrane surface functionalization: Why and how?

In this webinar, the very active research area of membrane surface modification or functionalization will be discussed with emphasis on the needs for special surface properties in real membrane applications. Criteria are modularity, tunability and sustainability of the approaches. One important aspect is the decision about the integration of surface functionalization in the membrane fabrication process or in the usage cycle of a membrane module. The latter option is preferred for a number of long-time continuous membrane operations, but it will require adapted methodologies that allow task-specific functionalization of membranes in modules including methods that are suited for regeneration of the desired functionality.

Prof. Dr. Mathias Ulbricht is full professor for Chemical Technology in the Chemistry Department of University Duisburg-Essen, Germany ( His research interests are in the field of functional polymeric as well as nanohybrid materials and have a focus on synthetic membranes and membrane-based technologies for water purification, bioseparation and energy conversion.

Patrick Meares Preselection

Results of the first selection

In this year’s edition of the Patrick Meares prize, a committee of EMS Council members evaluated all the proposals received, which results were accepted by all EMS Council members. No Council member with a conflict of interest was part of the evaluation panel.

The evaluation criteria were the 1- Quality of the work (max. 5 points), 2- Impact of the work (related to papers as first author, other papers, oral and poster presentations, patents, …) (max. 5 points) and 3- "Letters of recommendation" (max. 2 points).

It’s important to highlight the high quality of the proposals, which turned the evaluation process very difficult.

The Material Research team, which is a part of TECH center at Donaldson EMEA is looking for a Materials Research Engineer function to support R&D programs within the Polymer Engineering group.

This team is mainly responsible for fundamental understanding of filtration problems and solving customer problems to secure stable or growth areas for Donaldson, associated with various business units (BU’s).

Within the research scope of TECH Center, a Material Research Engineer interacts with various other Donaldson teams such as Corporate Technology in the USA, Engineering departments of different BU’s,as well as external third parties, such as universities, institutes, suppliers and customers.


The primary responsibility of this role is to develop a new polymer based media or expand the uses of existing microfiltration media to compliment our portfolio of filtration products. Call for organizing EUROMEMBRANE 2024

The European Membrane Society (EMS) is keen on supporting scientific or technical events related to membranes and membrane processes. One of the flagships of the Society is the EUROMEMBRANE Conference. Supported by the EMS, EUROMEMBRANE aims to bring together European “membranologists” and colleagues from overseas to discuss in a vibrant and dynamic setting all aspects of research and applications of membrane and membrane processes. EMS, therefore, launches the Call for organizing the EUROMEMBRANE 2024 conference taking place in September 2024.


The application to the EMS Council should specify:

* Description of the facilities for the event and proposed dates;

* The risk assessment that shall include the format of the conference (in person, virtual or hybrid combining either in-person with a virtual component) and the policy of fees cancellation;

* Tentative program including contents and timing;

* Organizing committee, involving at least one of the EMS Council members;

* Scientific committee containing at least one of the EMS Council members;

* Budget outline, including any request for EMS funding or loan, a list of sponsors, and a break-even number. Any outsourcing of organizational work should be included in the budget. Any EMS loan received would be expected to be returned as the first call on excess income over expenses. Additional extra income is to be split evenly between EMS and the organizers. The EMS will not cover losses beyond the EMS funding or loan.

* All rights and duties will be formalized in a contract with the EMS.

A mandatory condition for granting the organization of the conference is the fulfillment of the requirement that the chair of the EUROMEMBRANE conference will be an academic entity. Private companies can participate in the organization of the conference (to help and support).


The deadline for receiving proposals for EUROMEMBRANE 2024 conference is June 30th 2022, 23:59 h Central European Time (CET). A short Guide for Applicants for organising an EMS event has been published: Guide Version 2021

It summarizes the principal points you should mention in your application to organise an EMS event and evaluate your application. It is meant to help you prepare the proposal to save time and check that you have considered all relevant aspects to make your proposal and the event a success. This Guide is divided into parts - Part I explains aspects that you should address during your application. Part II describes issues you are expected to follow up on and regularly inform the EMS Council about your successful application. When writing your application, it is recommended to read the information presented in Part II to help make your proposal more complete.

Richard Maling Barrer Medal

The Richard Maling Barrer Medal for Membrane Science and Technology, consisting of 10,000 € plus a lifetime membership in the European Membrane Society, is awarded to an individual to recognise outstanding work of exceptional significance in the area of membrane science and technology. Richard Maling Barrer was one of the pioneers in the membrane field with extensive and significant research on membrane material and gas transport. This award is given by the European Membrane Society to honour Professor Barrer memory and to recognise individuals who have made outstanding contributions that have significantly advanced membrane science and technology.


Anyone working in membrane science and technology is eligible to be nominated (except for current Council members of the European Membrane Society).


Nominations should be submitted by a current member of the European Membrane Society (EMS), not directly by the nominee. Current members of the EMS Council cannot submit the nominations.

The nomination package should include:

(1) A cover letter describing the nominee’s contribution and its importance to the field of membrane science and technology;

(2) Three additional letters in support of the nomination;

(3) Supporting Materials – a complete list of the nominee’s publications, patents, technical reports etc., and pdf copies of 4 selected essential outputs.


The deadline for the complete nomination package submission to the EMS Secretary (via email is January 31st 2022, 23:59 h Central European Time (CET).


A panel of referees will review nominations with final decisions made by the EMS Council. An award will only be made if there is a nominee whose contributions are sufficiently outstanding to warrant the prestigious medal. Medal winners will be presented during the Euromembrane 2022 conference.

Job Responsibilities

The mission of the Advanced Technology Solutions (ATS) group at ALaS Newport is to facilitate innovation of gas separation membranes and cartridges, including membrane manufacturing processes, through new product and process development.  This is achieved through strong competencies in polymer and membrane design, manufacture, characterization, modeling/simulations, and testing.  Technological improvements include the development of the next generation gas separation membranes and cartridges to meet market demand.  The ATS group also serves the manufacturing organization to troubleshoot plant operations as well as customer applications that employ ALaS membranes. 

The Membrane Scientist will provide technical expertise on a range of cross functional projects, including development of novel gas separation membrane materials, development of composite hollow fiber gas separation membranes and scale up of membrane manufacturing processes, while simultaneously supporting and implementing improvements to these processes and equipment.

At times the individual may be called to weigh in on issues related to the operations of these membranes at customer sites.  The individual may also support root cause determination and development of appropriate corrective and preventive actions.

Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Design and develop new and improved composite hollow fiber gas separation membranes
  • Provide technical support and guidance to Sales and Business Development teams
  • Scale up membrane manufacturing process and develop manufacturing procedures
  • Implement new and improved membrane manufacturing processes
  • Provide leadership in safety best practices as appropriate to product and process development, and related activities
  • Evaluate membrane separation performance in support of process development and field tests

Qualifications & Competencies


  • MS in Chemical Engineering, with specialization in membrane gas separation processes (PhD preferred but not required)

  • 5+ years of hands on experience in gas separation membrane development
  • Demonstrates strong process and operational safety behavior at all times. 
  • Ability to work independently and in small teams, in a way that enhances team dynamics.
  • Ability to lead and manage small to medium projects.
  • Individuals should expect to work in an office, lab, and/or manufacturing environment with modest and part-time support from lab technicians and operators.
  • Hands-on work in the lab and in a production environment as required to execute membrane and cartridge development projects, lead troubleshooting and root cause investigations, etc. 
  • Capable of clear and concise written and verbal communication through reports, status updates, presentations, etc.
  • Able to interface with customers, suppliers, and senior management to positively convey information.
  • Capable of maintaining ongoing and developing new relationships with key technical partners in ALaS, R&D, external contractors, technology partners, etc. 



  • Fluency in HYSYS and membrane process modeling
  • 5+ years experience in polymer QC, dope preparation, MEDAL technology platform fiber manufacturing processes (e.g., spinning, fiber dehydration, forming, potting, skiving, testing)
  • Expertise in hydrodynamics of coating processes
  • Hands-on capability to comprehensively evaluate and predict membrane performance.
  • A strong technical understanding of all Hollow Fiber Production Steps employed in a Manufacturing Plant. 
  • Stay abreast with technical reports and published literature; alert technical team of new developments, willingness to test out new concepts to improve performance, yield, etc.

Working Conditions

  • The individual’s working environment will vary depending on specific activities on any given day, but generally will rotate between office, laboratory, and membrane manufacturing facility areas.
  • The individual will be required to wear appropriate PPE as mandated by the facility.

The departments of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering and the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability (CfB) at the Technical University of Denmark offers a position as a PhD student in the field of downstream processing of biologically-produced polymers. This position will be hosted at the Center for Process and Systems Engineering in close collaboration with the Systems Environmental Microbiology laboratory at CfB working with separation and purification unit operations i.e. liquid-liquid extraction, solid-liquid extraction, filtration, chromatography among others, particularly at pilot plant scale. This PhD project is part of the PhD Program of the Fermentation Based Biomanufacturing (FBM) Initiative at DTU where we educate true biomanufacturing experts with interdisciplinary competences in cell factory-engineering and process engineering with a strong focus on industrial applications.

The FBM Initiative is funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation, and under this initiative, scientists from DTU Chemical Engineering, DTU Bioengineering, and the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability work together to engineer new or optimized production hosts or processes and solve the interdisciplinary challenges of large-scale bioproduction. The FBM Initiative’s research infrastructure includes a well-equipped fermentation core with an automation and high-throughput micro-fermentation unit, a pre-pilot plant and a pilot plant. Located in the Copenhagen area, one of the world’s strongest biotech hubs, DTU’s FBM Initiative offers a unique and internationally leading education and research environment with exceptional conditions for biotech career starters.

This is one of six PhD student positions available on the FBM PhD program this year.

The expected starting date is 1st of October 2021.

Responsibilities and qualifications
Your overall focus will be to strengthen the department’s competences within the field of downstream processing, with special focus on the development of novel or improved separation methods and sequences for separation or purification of intracellular products after fermentation. You will work with nearby colleagues, and with both academic and industrial partners in Denmark as well as abroad.

Your primary tasks will be to:

  • Explore and develop new methods or strategies for extraction and separation of products contained in bacterial cells after fermentation at different scales.
  • Design process for high-yield recovery of biopolymers in a green and sustainable fashion.
  • Operate pilot plant equipment and optimize conditions towards recovery and purification of bacterial polyhydroxyalkanoates.
  • Teach and supervise BSc and MSc student projects.

You must have a two-year master’s degree (120 ECTS points) on Chemical or Biochemical Engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master’s degree. The candidate must have previous experience in downstream processing or handling of unit operations, particularly extraction, chromatography or filtration, preferably at pilot plant scale. Previous experience with handling bio-based polymers and/or purification protocols will be also positively assessed.
