The departments of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering and the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability (CfB) at the Technical University of Denmark offers a position as a PhD student in the field of downstream processing of biologically-produced polymers. This position will be hosted at the Center for Process and Systems Engineering in close collaboration with the Systems Environmental Microbiology laboratory at CfB working with separation and purification unit operations i.e. liquid-liquid extraction, solid-liquid extraction, filtration, chromatography among others, particularly at pilot plant scale. This PhD project is part of the PhD Program of the Fermentation Based Biomanufacturing (FBM) Initiative at DTU where we educate true biomanufacturing experts with interdisciplinary competences in cell factory-engineering and process engineering with a strong focus on industrial applications.

The FBM Initiative is funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation, and under this initiative, scientists from DTU Chemical Engineering, DTU Bioengineering, and the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability work together to engineer new or optimized production hosts or processes and solve the interdisciplinary challenges of large-scale bioproduction. The FBM Initiative’s research infrastructure includes a well-equipped fermentation core with an automation and high-throughput micro-fermentation unit, a pre-pilot plant and a pilot plant. Located in the Copenhagen area, one of the world’s strongest biotech hubs, DTU’s FBM Initiative offers a unique and internationally leading education and research environment with exceptional conditions for biotech career starters.

This is one of six PhD student positions available on the FBM PhD program this year.

The expected starting date is 1st of October 2021.

Responsibilities and qualifications
Your overall focus will be to strengthen the department’s competences within the field of downstream processing, with special focus on the development of novel or improved separation methods and sequences for separation or purification of intracellular products after fermentation. You will work with nearby colleagues, and with both academic and industrial partners in Denmark as well as abroad.

Your primary tasks will be to:

  • Explore and develop new methods or strategies for extraction and separation of products contained in bacterial cells after fermentation at different scales.
  • Design process for high-yield recovery of biopolymers in a green and sustainable fashion.
  • Operate pilot plant equipment and optimize conditions towards recovery and purification of bacterial polyhydroxyalkanoates.
  • Teach and supervise BSc and MSc student projects.

You must have a two-year master’s degree (120 ECTS points) on Chemical or Biochemical Engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master’s degree. The candidate must have previous experience in downstream processing or handling of unit operations, particularly extraction, chromatography or filtration, preferably at pilot plant scale. Previous experience with handling bio-based polymers and/or purification protocols will be also positively assessed.

Subject description

Blue Energy or Salinity Gradient Power is sustainable and environmental friendly power but so far relatively unexplored in Sweden.  Reverse Electrodialysis (RED) is an advanced membrane-based technology utilizing the salinity gradient to generate electric power. To establish this technology further improvements regarding the membrane, module/stack design and process operations are required.  

The Membrane Group at Lund University has many years of experience in membrane processes and is now looking for a new coworker focus on the RED process. The Postdoctoral position will include the development of the module/stack design using CFD and 3-D printing. Optimization operating conditions in terms of temperature, flow rate, concentration and long-term testing using Swedish water sources combined with fouling control.

 

Work duties 

The main duties involved in a post-doctoral position is to conduct research. Teaching may also be included, but up to no more than 20% of working hours. The position shall include the opportunity for three weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning.

Optimization of the Reverse Electrodialysis (RED) module/stack design i.e. spacer design using CFD and 3-D printing. The Department of Chemistry offers a postdoctoral position in the field of Technical Chemistry that will mainly work on developing and testing membranes for harvesting blue energy based on Swedish natural and artificial water resources. The postdoctoral project includes the theoretical estimation of extractable energy, testing and characterizing the commercial membranes, synthesizing polymers, characterizing new membranes, and applying the prepared membranes for blue energy production. Project description

Our research group is focused on the design and synthesis of artificial membranes for gas separation, energy storage, and production. Currently, we focuses on designing and synthesizing new polymeric membranes for harvesting blue energy. In collaboration with Professor Frank Lipnizki research group at Lund University, we are going to develop a robust system for harvesting blue energy based on Swedish natural and artificial resources. The project is interdisciplinary, and the postdoctoral candidate will have the opportunity to plan and develop routes to synthesize novel membranes. The research involves the theoretical calculations for estimating the extractable energy, design, synthesis, and testing of new membranes, characterizing the membrane, and applying the prepared membrane in a lab scale unit.

 

Working tasks
The postdoctoral project includes the theoretical estimation of extractable energy, designing, synthesizing, characterizing new polymeric membranes, and testing them in a lab-scale setup to produce the blue energy. Furthermore, commercial membranes from several companies need to be evaluated. The promising membranes will be tested in the pilot-scale setup that we are planning to build at Lund University for this purpose. As a postdoc, you will contribute with your knowledge to the research group, summarize the research and present your progress at group meetings. The employment is full-time for a period of two years, starting at a date decided in agreement between the two parties.

 

Qualifications

The required qualification is a doctoral degree or a foreign degree that is deemed equivalent in chemistry in the field of polymer chemistry, chemical engineering or equivalent. Priority should be given to candidates who have completed their doctoral degree no more than three years before the closing date of the application. A candidate who has completed their degree prior to this may be considered if special circumstances exist. Special circumstances include absence due to illness, parental leave or clinical practice, appointments of trust in trade unions or similar circumstances. These must be clearly stated in the application.

You must have good knowledge of polymer chemistry, thermodynamic, membrane fabrication, membrane characterization, and application in energy production. As well as a documented good ability to conduct research and present it in writing in the form of scientific publications in expert-reviewed journals. You must be able to independently develop multistage syntheses and solve challenging synthetic problems in order to efficiently design, produce and characterize new membranes.

A desire to conduct research in a multidisciplinary project and in an environment that promotes collaboration between people with different skills, as well as excellent oral and written knowledge of English is required. Membrane filtration is a separation process which is well-established for the desalination of seawater with reverse osmosis. In this project the emerging membrane processes forward osmosis and membrane distillation are coupled to desalinated seawater using low grade wasted heat from a concentrated solar power system. The focus of this work will be to optimized the interplay between forward osmosis and membrane distillation considering different membranes, draw solutions and process parameters. The results for the optimization will be used for scale-up and modelling of the process as well as the design, installation and operation of a demonstration unit in the Middle East.The Membrane Group at Lund University has many years of experience in membrane processes and is now looking for a new co-worker to extend this work into the emerging membrane processes – forward osmosis and membrane distillation. The PhD student position will include the integration and optimization of the two membrane processes on pilot scale as well as the development and operation a demonstration unit in the Middle East.

 

Work duties

The main duties of doctoral students are to devote themselves to their research studies which includes participating in research projects and third cycle courses. The work duties will also include teaching and other departmental duties (no more than 20%).The research contains the following subtasks:

  • Review of available scientific literature on the research topic and presentation in a report/article.

Title: Surgical masks testing: a multidisciplinary approach led by membrane scientists

 

Abstract: The outbreak of SARS-CoV-2 pandemic highlighted the lack of masks and personal protective equipment, which represents the main defense available against COVID-19. The masks shortage was dramatic in Italy, the first European country hit by the pandemic. To address the emergency and to support the Italian industrial reconversion to produce surgical masks a multidisciplinary group of the University of Bologna created a laboratory to test surgical mask according to the European regulations. The group, driven by the expertise of the membrane group of DICAM, built the test lines to perform all the functional tests required. Chemical engineers, microbiologists and occupational medicine were part of the team. In Europe, surgical masks must be labelled with the CE mark and meet the requirements defined in EN14683:2019 and in EN ISO 10993-1. Four testing lines were assembled to perform the required tests, namely breathability, bacterial filtration efficiency (BFE), bioburden and splash test (for masks type II R). According to EN 14683:2019, the experimental workflow starts with the breathability test, which is the easiest though fundamental and helps to immediately exclude non suitable materials on the basis of the air permeability. Suitable masks are then tested for BFE, which provides indication on the filtration capabilities towards droplets like the breathing aerosol, and for microbial cleanliness. The chemico-physical properties of the constituent materials are also characterized and correlated to the breathability and BFE results. For masks of type II R the resistance to blood penetration is determined with the splash test with synthetic blood. Attempts to optimize and improve the protocols for masks validation looking at more advanced techniques that, if reliable and fast, could be proposed for the modification of the current test standard. The Laboratory started its activity on March 24th. As of Dec 31st 2020 602 prototypes were tested, with nearly 1200 tests performed in total. A critical analysis of the results will be presented, moreover results of long run tests to investigate the life of surgical masks with use will be discussed.

 

Speaker: Cristiana Boi, Department of Civil, Chemical, Environmental and Materials Engineering University of Bologna, Italy

Cristiana Boi is Associate Professor in Chemical Engineering at the University of Bologna, Italy and Adjunct Assistant Professor in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, USA. She graduated in Chemical Engineering in 1991 and received her PhD in Chemical Engineering in1996, winning the EMS Award for the best PhD thesis in the membrane field in Europe in that year. She has been the President of the European Membrane Society, EMS, (2017-18) and she is the Secretary of the World Association of Membrane Societies, WA-MS, (2017-20). Her research activity is in the field of membrane and chromatographic separations, in particular regarding the preparation, modification and characterization of functional materials for bioseparations and water purification. The main focus is on the fundamental aspects of the different processes considered and on their possible applications. Current projects involve the purification of gene therapy vectors, of extracellular vesicles (EVs), the removal of toxins and small molecules from blood and water streams, and the production of novel chromatographic media. In March 2020,Professor Cristiana Boi has funded the University of Bologna Surgical Masks Testing Lab and she is currently leading a research group involved in the characterization and testing of materials and facemasks. Cristiana Boi has published more than 35 articles in high impact peer reviewed journals, she presented more than 100 papers at international conferences and she has been invited to present seminars at several universities and companies around the world. She is a member of the editorial board of the journal Membranes and she is act as a reviewer for the most relevant scientific journals on her research area.

European Membrane Society is aware of the difficulties that early-stage researchers may face for participating in international conferences. Therefore, EMS launched a programme for supporting the participation of early-stage researchers (Young Academics) in international membrane conferences. Support will be provided to cover the conference fee excluding accommodation and meals (when included in the conference fee).

On March 24, 2021, at the age of 83, Professor Yuri Yampolskii, an outstanding scientist, Chief researcher of the TIPS RAS, Doctor of Chemical Sciences, died after a serious illness.

Yuri was at the origin of the Russian membrane science. Since 1973, he worked at the A.V. Topchiev Institute of Petrochemical Synthesis of the Russian Academy of Sciences, where he headed the laboratory of Membrane gas separation.

Yuri Yampolskii was a laureate of the Russian Federation Government Award (1995) for his work in the field of membrane materials science, an honorary member of the European Membrane Society (EMS), a member of the American Chemical Society (ACS), the American Association for Advancing Science (AAAS) and a permanent deputy editor-in-chief of the Petroleum Chemistry journal.

Yuri became world-famous for his work on membrane materials science, in fact, this term, which is widely used today in world science, was coined by him. He was the author of the course of lectures "Membrane Materials Science", which was taught at the Faculty of Materials Science of MSU since 2004, and continues today by his students. For the first time, he justified the application of the positron annihilation method and other probe methods to the study of the free volume of glassy polymers. His extensive social connections with various groups of scientists in Russia and abroad, including those in the field of synthetic polymer chemistry, allowed us to significantly increase the range of membrane polymers studied and to create in 1998 the Database "Gas separation parameters of glassy polymers", which is still works as the hallmark of the TIPS RAS Membrane Center. Yuri Yamploskii is the author of more than 450 scientific publications and 12 monographs. His broad scientific outlook and scientific curiosity allowed him to generate new ideas and directions of work until his last days. Thanks to his leadership talent, many of his students work around the world in the field of membrane science and membrane technology.

For the first time, I met Yuri Yampolskii in person as a doctoral student at the CHISA 2002 conference held in Prague. Since Yuri was a good friend of my former supervisor Milan Šípek, he also visited our laboratory in all of Prague. Subsequently, we measured the sorption of organic vapors in amorphous Teflon AF2400 for his working group (A. Tokarev et al, https://doi.org/10.1002/polb.20725). Our next personal contact was at the Euromembrane 2006 conference in Giardini Naxos, Sicily. I vividly remember Yuri sitting in a beautiful hotel park on a bench overlooking the sea, and the conference participants coming to the conference building greeted him in a friendly way. Then our meetings were more frequent thanks to the involvement of our workplaces in a solution of joint FP7-NMP DoubleNanoMem project, discussions on joint articles and participation in other conferences such as Euromembrane, ICOM, etc. Our last contact was from last year. As an academic guest editor, Yuri asked me and my close friends from Italy ( ITM-CNR) to review the Ionic Liquid Gas Separation Membranes for Membranes journal.

With Yuri's passing, the membrane community loses an important member who has been recognized as a scientist and the author of many inspirational books on membrane processes.

Professor Yampolskii contributed with articles, reviews, books and databases to the rationalization and understanding of the process of gas sorption and transport in polymeric membranes for gas separation. He focused, among the others, on fundamental problems such as the ageing of glassy polymers and the role of free volume in gas transport, and created correlations between molecular quantities and separation performance. Professor Yampolskii aimed at creating order in the intricate world of membrane properties and structure. His work will remain to guide those who want to start research in the field of gas separation membranes or want to design a new membrane separation process.
