The Department of Food Science, Faculty of Science at the University of Copenhagen invites applications for a 2 years Post-Doc position in the area of “Dairy Process Technology” from March 1st 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter.

We seek a candidate to perform excellent research within membrane filtration. The successful candidate has an innovative mindset and an international research record with a relevant background. The postdoc’s duties will include research within the above field as well as teaching and supervision of PhD and MSc students

The position is associated to the “Platform for Novel Gentle Processing and Shelf-life Intelligence” that is a dynamic industrial multidisciplinary environment supported by Danish Dairy Industry.

The Postdoc will be a part of the Section for Ingredients and Dairy Technology, which conducts basic and applied inter-disciplinary research in close collaboration with industry. The section currently consist of 5 full professors, 8 associate professors, 11 assistant professors and post docs, and more than 15 PhD candidates as well as highly skilled laboratory technicians. The section has at its disposal various pilot plant facilities and advanced analytical infrastructure.

The Department’s research areas share the mission to contribute with new solutions for society and industry to support sustainable food production, food security and safety as well as production of high quality food promoting human health and wellbeing. The Department of Food Science is recognized for excellence in food research, education, and industrial collaboration. Qualifications are expected within the following areas:

Doctoral Student in Resource Recovery - Biotechnology - University of Boras, Sweden

In recent years, the Faculty of Textiles, Engineering and Business has undergone significant development in the research field of Resource Recovery. The research and education environment today consists of seven professors, about 30 doctoral students, and about 30 senior teachers and researchers and postdocs. Education is conducted at both the Bachelor’s and Master’s levels and we also have our unique doctoral education programme in Resource Recovery.

We have access to modern and well-equipped teaching and research laboratories. Research in Resource Recovery takes place mainly in the areas of energy, industrial biotechnology, polymer technology, modelling and systems analysis, and civil engineering. We have a large network, both nationally and internationally, and well-developed collaborations with both industry and public actors. Within the Industrial Biotechnology research group, 20 doctoral students have defended their theses between 2014 and 2020.

This doctoral position deals with membrane reactors in order to produce different materials from waste.

The Department of Resource Recovery and Building Technology is seeking a doctoral student in Resource Recovery with a focus on biotechnology.

Job description
The duties include doctoral education within the research project described above. In addition to doctoral studies, as agreed upon, departmental duties, including teaching, research, and administration, can amount to up to 20% of full time.

For employment within the project, a Master’s degree is required in e.g. resource recovery, chemical engineering, or equivalent, with a specialisation in Biotechnology. You should be able to communicate well in both written and spoken English. We are looking for someone with lab experience and knowledge when it comes to working with membrane bioreactors and anaerobic digestion processes.

Membrane technology represents a sustainable approach to solving a wide range of separation tasks. Contents of the planned dissertation are experimental and theoretical investigations in the research group Membrane Technology of the Department of Environmental, Process & Energy Engineering.

Alongside the classical process engineering separation methods such as distillation, absorption or extraction, membrane filtration has developed into a high-performance separation process. Its basic field of application ranges from blood purification to the recovery of valuable substances from process streams to water treatment.

The membrane properties can be changed over a wide spectrum through the manufacturing process and post-treatment steps and can be adjusted for the respective application.

The efficiency of membrane systems and other coupled processes in the field of water treatment (keywords micropollutant elimination, fourth purification stage) will be investigated and improved within the scope of the dissertation project.

Postdoc position NanoElectroMembrane Processes for the Removal of Trace Pollutants in Water Reuse - Karlsruhe (Germany)

This Postdoc position builds on ongoing research projects in the area of NanoElectroMembrane processes for the removal of trace pollutants during water reuse.

The main aim of this project is to fabricate an electrochemical membrane and extend its applications in environmental monitoring and remediation.
The research is carried out in collaboration with the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the Technion, in Israel.

The project is developed with the following objectives, i) design and set-up of an electrochemical membrane filtration system, ii) develop a suitable membrane with good electrochemical properties, iii) study the effectiveness of membrane for the removal of micropollutants.

This research will investigate the following research questions:
– Which kind of composite membranes are suitable in electrochemical filtration?
– How to measure the electrochemical properties of membrane?
– What are the mechanisms involved in trace pollutant removal in electrochemical membrane filtration?

Further, the postdoc will be responsible for process development, setup and control of this membrane filtration system in the laboratory working with workshops and suppliers.

At postdoctoral level the preparation of research proposals and publications, participation in team responsibilities and activities as well as the supervision of students is a key requirement. Management of the BMBF funded project involves the preparation of reports, budget controls and organization of project meetings. Throughout the project, there will be additional opportunities for cooperation with internal and external partners, team events, as well as contributing to (a minimal amount of) teaching.

You will hold a PhD in Chemical, Process, Environmental Engineering, or equivalent. You are a naturally curious person who is eager to learn more and has a strong interest in research. Experience with membrane filtration and electrochemical systems (of any scale) is a definite advantage, as well as being comfortable in specifying system components and sound experimental problem solving skills, water analysis and micropollutant experience – as well a good common sense. Excellent English language proficiency is essential, basic German language skills of advantage. Willingness to travel to Israel for project meetings as well as a valid driver’s licence is required.

EMS Council election (2021-2024) - Application

According to the EMS statutes, the Council has to be renewed by half every other year.

Position Description:
The incumbent brings an exceptional level of knowledge in the fundamentals of mass transfer and separation technologies, including absorbers, phase separators, extraction systems, filtration, centrifuge, crystallization, adsorption and membranes. He/she is considered Aramco’s foremost expert on separation technologies and equipment. He/she is instrumental in the scale-up and deployment of separation solutions – from bench scale to industrial use. He/she anticipates future trends/developments in separation technologies and equipment, and stays abreast of new developments in his/her area of expertise. He/she enhances the technical reputation of Aramco in the domain of fundamentals of mass transfer and separations in industry and academic arenas.

Provides superior technical insight to the R&D program, guidance to the R&D project leaders and to the plant technologists in the area of mass transfer, separation technologies and related equipment performance. He/she is Aramco’s ultimate technical authority on separation technologies and connects with/brings in the world’s best separation expert when/as needed. The incumbent works alone and does not have formal line management responsibility. A significant portion of his/her time is devoted to the quality coaching and scientific guidance of R&D project leaders and senior technologists involved in separation/purification. As a member of Aramco’s R&T Advisory Council, regularly reviews the technology needs from Aramco R&D, plants and business in terms of separation solutions, and shapes the most effective corresponding sourcing strategy and deployment.

Doctoral student in Chemical Engineering - Membrane process for storm and rainwater harvesting – Lund University, Sweden

Project description

Membrane filtration is a separation process which is well-established for drinking water preparation and wastewater treatment. In this project membrane technology will be used for urban storm water, rainwater from residential houses, and mixed rain- and storm water from a parking garage. By using Direct Membrane Filtration with ultrafiltration membranes it is aimed to remove micro-plastics and – pollutants from the collected water and polish it for re-use. In this concept, water will pass through the membrane for re-use, while pollutants and bacteria are accumulated, and collected. The quality of the water collected will be monitored to evaluate its use for non-potable purposes. The Membrane Group at Lund University has many years of experience in membrane processes and is now looking for a new coworker to extend this work into membrane processes for rain and storm water harvesting and upgrading. The PhD student position will include the integration and optimization of Direct Membrane Filtration on pilot scale in a housing area. The aim is to operate a pilot, maintain and improve its performance and analyze the water recovered by the membrane unit.
